In 1973 the Gimli Women's Institute prepared a three-volume, 1400-page history of the Gimli community, for entry in the triennial competition for the Lady Tweedsmuir trophy awarded for the best community history compiled by a Women's Institute in Canada. This book, GIMLI SAGA, was awarded the silver trophy at the national convention in June, 1973.
As their centennial project for the centennial of Gimli in 1975, the Gimli Women's Institute have completed a revised version of GIMLI SAGA for pub-lication. This book includes the story of the first settlement of New Iceland, on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg, in October, 1875; the arrival of other ethnic pioneers around 1900; the growth of the community, its schools; churches, industries, organizations, sports, and cultural activities. The second section contains over 150 family histories. Over 400 pictures add interest to the book.
